Title: The Hunger Games
Author: Suzanne Collins
Theme: Courage
Main Character: Katniss Everdeen
Chapter where theme is found: Chapter 3 and 7
Plot (What is this story about):
Katniss Everdeen takes the place of her younger sister, Primrose, in a dangerous battle for survival. This battle is called the "Hunger Games".
Theme Chosen (what is the lesson or message):
The theme that I related to the most from the Hunger Games is the importance of courage. In the book, Katniss was afraid to fight in the Hunger Games, but she volunteered herself because she did not want to risk the death of her younger sister. She gave up everything to take her sister's place. This shows courage, because she was willing to do something she was afraid to do, in order to save her sister's life.
Another example of Katniss' courage can be found in chapter 7, when Katniss risks her own safety to help out Rue, a young child who was chosen to play in the Hunger Games. Instead of being selfish and only looking out for herself, Katniss chooses to help out a friend, even though it almost costs her own life and safety.
Why did you choose this theme?
I chose the theme of courage, because I am sometimes afraid to do things. I want to help others and be a good friend to everyone, but I am very shy. I know that having courage is important, because it allows you to do things you are afraid to do or try. In my life, I want to try harder to practice courage and help others more.
